Sound Design

Banco De Creadores

This was one of those projects that we had to put together during the COVID-19 pandemic, and because of it, we had to get our hands on as many resources as we could in order to get Banregio's message across. One of those resources was sound, and since the video is filled with cutouts, pictures, and more collage elements, we knew we needed an audio boost in order for the message to come alive.

In this piece, you get to see various ways audio is of support. There is a moment where you can spot blue circles that represent money, but you never see any coins, sound does that job of telling your brain what to perceive the circles as. The tone in the narrator's voice is also followed by a similar musical beat and alternates depending on the mood. This is all on purpose in order for you to feel in some way connected to what's happening based on a previous experience. This is for you to feel moved.

Some visual elements have literal sounds assigned to them, for example, if you’re going to look at a typing machine typing, then you have to be able to hear it. There are also not-so-literal sounds assigned to things like shapes and lines moving up, and in order for the viewer to understand their direction represents changes, we make the pitch go up and down. The sound of a person sitting on a mountain comes along with the sound of stones and a circle popping up can be represented by a sound of a lamp switch being pulled to turn on.

More Sound Effect Moments

Sound effects must precisely follow the narrative in order for the story to be told the right way. Uncertainty and doubt in the narrative must be reflected by music intensifying echoes, making it feel like we are in a cave. The tension goes up and if you pay attention, you can hear a water pot hissing in the background. We have a moment of silence in the video where we get a break from all the jazz, providing us a second to rest. Every sound has its own purpose, and at the end we can hear sounds like a seatbelt being put on, leaving us with a positive note to the whole story.

Sound enhances the storytelling. Experimenting, inventing, and coming up with ideas is the roadmap to finding the perfect match between a visual and a sound, a combination that doesn't let the mind or eye wonder why it sounds the way it does. The basis of sound design is layering and processing, to be good at it you need a set of techniques with which to explore and must appreciate sounds alone and later be able to put them together. You could cut, mix, compress, pitch up and down, and morph audio to create original content.

May we cease to see sound design as an additional part of projects and recognize it is essential in order to put high-quality work together. A big hooray for all the sound designers out there and every other star middlemen that are part of making ideas come to life. Producers, mix engineers, sound designers are doing a good job when people don't notice what they did.
